How to Have an Asymmetric Life

Newsletter

Hey friends,

I stumbled upon a gem of a talk on YouTube this week, and I couldn’t wait to share it with you. It’s part of the “last lecture” series from Stanford Business School, presented by a brilliant speaker, Graham Weaver. The theme of the talk struck a chord with me: “How to Have an Asymmetric Life

Honestly, I can’t recommend this talk highly enough. It’s the kind of advice that has the potential to radically shift your perspective. But if you want the TL;DR, here are the key takeaways.

Building an Asymmetric Life: The Four Pillars

  1. Do Hard Work
  2. Do Your Work
  3. Do It for Decades
  4. Write Your Story

Do Hard Work: There’s no substitute for this. Anyone who’s achieved outlier success in work or in life has had to work hard for it.

Do Your Work: Life is suffering. Choose to do things worth suffering for. Put your energy into work that aligns with your values, work that gives you a sense of purpose and meaning. This is your “work” in the grand scheme of life.

Do It for Decades: “If you genuinely love something and do it for 10+ years, there’s almost no way you won’t succeed at it”. There’s immense value in playing the long game, letting time compound your work into something extraordinary.

Write Your Story: Write down your vision, set your goals, and take the reins of your narrative. Writing doesn’t just serve as a reminder but also crystallises your thoughts and makes them tangible. It lets you to steer your life in the direction you want, rather than being a passive passenger.

Such a great talk, with some inspiring and actionable takeaways. I haven’t done it justice in this email, but if there’s one thing you watch this week, you should watch this.

Have a great week!

Ali xx

💕 My Favourite Things this Week

  1. Podcast – I absolutely loved this episode of the Tim Ferriss show where he interviews Sam Corcos, co-founder of Levels. Loads of actionable takeaways around delegation, remote work and working with EAs (executive assistants), lots of which I’ve already taken action on with my own assistant. Amazing stuff.
  2. Podcast – I also very much enjoyed this episode of the Founders podcast all about Ettore Bugatti, the chap who (perhaps unsurprisingly) founded the Buggati supercar brand. Great story, with inspiring twists and turns, and as always, I love David Senra’s podcasting style.
  3. Musical – My team and I went on a cheeky trip to London’s West End to watch Frozen: The Musical. This was my second time watching the show, and I campaigned hard for it to be a team social because it’s utterly brilliant. If you’re anywhere near London, or happen to visit anytime soon, I can’t recommend it more. It’s absolutely magical.
  4. Article – This is a fun blog post from Vitalik, the founder of Ethereum: “My 40-liter backpack travel guide“. I’m about to set off on my own digital nomad adventure, and took lots of tips away from this, in particular the one about becoming a USB-C maximalist. Check it out if you’re a fan of 1-backpack travel, or if you’re intrigued by the idea 🙂

✍️ Quote of the Week

“The false game is to give legitimacy to the notion that there is a hierarchy of importance among human beings.”
