A Simple Trick to Beat Procrastination

Newsletter

Hey friends,

As you know, Iā€™m all about finding little hacks and mindset shifts that boost my productivity and help me live a happier, more intentional life.

One that my brother mentioned on our podcast last week wasĀ a trick for combattingĀ procrastination.

As you know, itā€™s way too easy to fall into anĀ infinite poolĀ like scrolling through twitter, browsing instagram and the like. Often we find ourselves doing it without really thinking, and then before we know it, an hourā€™s gone and weā€™re feeling terrible about ourselves.

But thereā€™s something we can do about this – when we notice ourselves doing something useless (like scrolling through Twitter or Instagram), we can ask ourselvesĀ ā€œWhat do I actually want to be doing right now?ā€

In some cases, the answer might well be ā€œI want to be aimlessly scrolling through Twitterā€, in which case continue my good friend. Youā€™re winning because youā€™re being intentional about how you spend your time.

But in most other cases, I suspect the answer might be ā€œI probably donā€™t want to be scrolling through Twitter right now. Instead I want to be writing my daily journalā€. And then, having had that thought, weā€™d be 10x more likely to stop scrolling twitter and instead do the thing we actually want to do.

I really like this tactic because it reminds us that what we do with our time isĀ entirelyĀ within our own control.

ā€œI just canā€™t stop myself from going on Twitterā€ is a myth. Itā€™s not heroin. WeĀ canĀ simply choose to not waste time on it, if thatā€™s what we want. Sometimes we just need a little nudge, to remind ourselves that weā€™re in control.

Have a great week!

2 – Book –Ā Iā€™ve started listening toĀ Six of Crows, a fantasy series byĀ Leigh Bardugo. So far, itā€™s incredible and itā€™s filling the hole in my heart from when I finished theĀ Wheel of TimeĀ series a few weeks ago.

Quote of the Week

Life is too short to waste, but it is also too long to be a pessimist or nihilist. Whatever youā€™re doing now is just a stepping-stone to the next project or adventure.
